- The Kaveri rises at Talakaveri in the Kodagu (Coorg) hills of Karnataka and drains into the Bay of Bengal after crossing Tamil Nadu.
- It is called Dhakshina Ganga, the Ganga of the South, and its delta is the rice bowl of Tamil Nadu.
- The Mettur Dam (Stanley Reservoir) in Salem district and the Krishiraja Sagar in Karnataka are major reservoirs on the Kaveri.
- The Periyar is the longest river flowing through Tamil Nadu; the Vaigai drains Madurai; the Thamirabarani drains Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi.
- Tamil Nadu's rivers are rain-fed — there is no snowmelt — so their flow follows the monsoon, mostly the north-east monsoon of October to December.
The story
Think of the Kaveri as a courier who begins her shift in a coffee estate. At Talakaveri, in the Kodagu hills of Karnataka, she fills one trunk with water and signs for it. That detail alone answers a favourite TNPSC question: a Tamil Nadu river whose source is not in Tamil Nadu.
She then walks south and takes the dramatic route — at Hogenakkal the trunk goes over the rocks in a horseshoe of foam. Below that, at Salem, a gatekeeper stops her. This is Mettur Dam, and the reservoir behind him is called Stanley Reservoir. He is the reason the Cauvery delta can be irrigated in a dry summer: he holds her bill until the sowing season.
Past Karur and Tiruchirappalli the road flattens, and here the courier does something unusual: she splits herself in two to deliver the same parcel. The distributaries are the Vennar and the Kollidam, also called the Coleroon. Where they fan out, the land becomes a delta of paddy, and that paddy is why she is named Dhakshina Ganga, the Ganga of the South, and why the region is called the rice bowl of Tamil Nadu. Her route ends at the Bay of Bengal near Poompuhar — she delivers and never comes back.
Her three brothers never travel. Periyar is the tallest of the family and is the longest river flowing through Tamil Nadu; he rises in the Western Ghats at Kodickencherry and goes out to the Arabian Sea. Vaigai is the local one — she walks straight through Madurai and, being short and rain-fed, is often reduced to a chain of pools by summer. Thamirabarani is the brother with two incomes: because the south-west and the north-east monsoon both touch her basin, she is one of the few Tamil Nadu rivers with water through more of the year.
Now put them in one line and you have the four names TNPSC keeps asking: Ka-Pe-Va-Tha. Kaveri travels and irrigates a delta; Periyar is the longest; Vaigai is Madurai's and dries; Thamirabarani is fed twice. The rule under all four: no snow, so no permanent flow — the rain decides. When you meet any river question, ask what the monsoon did that year, and the answer usually follows.

- Gatekeeper at Salem
- Mettur Dam, holding Stanley Reservoir for the delta.
- Splits to deliver twice
- Distributaries Vennar and Kollidam (Coleroon) build the delta.
- Ka-Pe-Va-Tha
- Kaveri · Periyar (longest) · Vaigai (Madurai, dries) · Thamirabarani (two monsoons).

The Vennar and the Kollidam (Coleroon).
Which river is the longest flowing through Tamil Nadu?
The Periyar, which drains to the Arabian Sea.
Why are most Tamil Nadu rivers seasonal?
They are rain-fed with no snowmelt source, so their flow depends on the monsoon.
