The story
Inside every leaf there is a tiny green kitchen, and the head cook is a pigment called chlorophyll. She has one strange rule: she will not cook after dark. Sunlight is not an ingredient she adds to the pot — it is the gas under it. So the kitchen is lit only in the day, which is why the leaf is called the kitchen of the plant.
Two deliveries arrive, and they arrive from opposite ends. Water is sent up from the roots, pushed through the stem like water through a straw, and reaches the leaf from below. Carbon dioxide arrives from the air, and to take it in the cook opens small windows on the underside of the leaf. Those windows are the stomata. She is not greedy about either: she takes in only what the recipe requires.
The recipe is where the marks are, and it has four numbers. Six guests come in through the windows — six molecules of carbon dioxide. Six are pulled up the straw — six molecules of water. What goes out is equally exact: one glucose cake, C₆H₁₂O₆, stays in the kitchen as food, and six oxygens walk straight back out of the door into the air we breathe. Hold the shape 6, 6 in — 1, 6 out, and the equation writes itself.
The cook also keeps leftovers. When the day has been bright she has more sugar than the plant can spend, so she stores it as starch, and starch is what the famous iodine test looks for. Put a leaf that has been sitting in sunlight on a dish and let a drop of iodine fall on it: the brown drop turns blue-black wherever starch is hiding. That one colour change tells you photosynthesis actually happened — and it is a favourite assertion-reason question.
Finally, the trade that makes the whole story worth remembering. Animals, us included, buy food and breathe out carbon dioxide. The kitchen takes that carbon dioxide, keeps the carbon, and hands back the oxygen. So a plant is not merely decoration in a room: it is a counter that runs on daylight, taking what we exhale and returning what we eat.
